Life and Work of Arthur Norman Prior
The founders of this digital research infrastructure are Per Hasle and Peter Øhrstrøm. In recent years, David Jakobsen has become an equal partner in maintaining and developing the site. In addition, several people and institutions have contributed to the development of the site over the years.
Most of all, our gratitude goes to Arthur Prior’s widow, the late Dr. Mary Prior (1922-2011). Peter Øhrstrøm and Per Hasle got to know Mary in 1989 and 1991, respectively, and from that time till her death Mary Prior provided a very interested, helpful and knowledgeable support for our studies in general and the development of this site in particular.
Great thanks are also due to Arthur Prior’s son, Dr. Martin Prior, who has been an invaluable and most helpful source for clarifying aspects of Prior’s life and work, not to mention the deciphering of Arthur Prior’s handwriting. We are also grateful to Martin Prior for having made his collection of documents related to his father and as well as his collection of letters exchanged between his parents available for the project.
Thanks to professor Saul Kripke for important information on his co-operation with A.N. Prior and for providing two letters from Prior to him.
We are indebted to several distinguished researchers, who have written on Prior and/or have known him personally. We want especially to thank Jack Copeland for answering various questions over the years, and Kit Fine for supporting the project and taking a considerable interest in it. We thank Nuel Belnap, Robert Bull, Anthony Kenny, Max Cresswell, Adriane Rini, Hans Kamp, Storrs McCall, Peter McKenzie, William Newton-Smith, and Alberto Zanardo for kind assistance and stimulating discussions.
We wish to thank those institutions and bodies who have substantially supported or otherwise helped this project:
· Balliol College for a continual interest in the project, including support for the Arthur Prior Centenary Conference in 2014.
· The Henrik von Wright Collection, Helsinki, Finland, for providing copies of a number of letters between A.N. Prior and Henrik von Wright.
· The Danish Council for Independent Research for a substantial grant for the project The Primacy of Tense. Current development of this site is financed as part of this project.
· The staff of the Bodleian Library in the Department for Western Manuscripts, and especially in the Modern Papers Reading Room, for kind assistance when working with Prior's papers there. A special thanks to the now-retired Colin Harris in this connection.
Finally, we wish to thank some persons directly involved in the production of this site:
· Fatima Sabir, who joined this work only this year (2018) but who has already made a great contribution to the further development and renewal of the site.
· Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen, whose technological expertise and assistance has been invaluable.
· Mauro Martinez, whose technical assistance has been very helpful for developing the current new version of this website.
· Jørgen Albretsen, who for many years worked on various aspects of our Prior-projects, including this site and the digitization (digital photographs) of the material in the Bodleian Library. Jørgen Albretsen also contributed decisively to establishing The Virtual Lab for Prior Studies.
